Influences for me, in terms of my approach to video art, are artists such as Marina Ambramovic, Yoko Ono and Cindy Sherman. They were hugely experimental in their approach to woman as subject rather than object, and their work often parodies the phenomenon of 'the male gaze' - something I too, as a feminist, find myself strongly interested in doing.
My first foray into video art was during a Yellow Week activity in my first year of EDAD - Yellow Week being weeks organised by our lecturers to push the boundaries of our comfort zones within art, often teaming us with students from other creative areas. On this occasion we worked alone on video installations, following a brief of producing work inspired by Birmingham. This led me to produce 'Opium' - a commentary on capitalism's influence on Birmingham's culture.
'Opium', to me, is clearly where I started to develop my visual style; the subject did not hold my interest particularly well, but the aesthetic of the video is distinctive and something I have sought to replicate in videos completed later on.
Below are storyboards of my completed videos to date; some are accompanied by links to posts where I discuss them in deeper detail.
